In
1859, a group of friends met at the home of William Brock Wellons,
D.D. to discuss the possibility of establishing a house of worship
in Suffolk, Virginia.
A
few months later, enough money had been pledged to justify the construction
of a church on Main Street. Construction was completed on March
1, 1860. The church was organized later that year with twenty-four
charter members. This represented one of the few times that a church
building had been constructed prior to the organization of the church
membership.
Although
the church building has been renovated three times over the years,
it is located on the original site. The most recent renovation was
completed in 1999, and included repairs and updates on virtually
every part of the church building.
We
subscribe to the tenant that all people are welcome at our church.
The only requirement is a desire to worship our Lord in a friendly
and supportive Christian atmosphere.
The church supports many missions including:
Coats
for the Community: A large undertaking, which invloves the collection,
cleaning, and distribution of over five-hundred winter coats to
underpriviliged members of our community.
Suffolk
Literacy Council: The church provides office and tutoring space
for the Literacy Council, which teaches members of our community
to read.
Meals
On Wheels: We support our local Meals on Wheels program by providing
kitchen space for the preparation of meals, and church members participate
in the delivery of meals on a regular basis.
